The slides, digital images, video tapes, and equipment housed within the Visual Resources Center are the property of Winthrop University and the Department of Art & Design. The collections and equipment are available through loan to Art & Design faculty members. Some of the equipment can be used within the facility, but do not circulate. Students may use the facility under the supervision of their professors. Procedures for borrowing and using materials and equipment are outlined in the Facility Use section.
As Visual Resources Center staffing is limited, the priorities for use of staff time will be as follows:

  • Filing slides
  • Digitizing the slide collection
  • Cataloging the collection
  • Managing the equipment
  • Making new slides

Collection development is driven by course demand. The Visual Resources Curator works closely with faculty members to determine and prioritize needs in order to fulfill the educational mission of the department. Faculty members may request that slides and/or digital images be created for use in their classes or professional activities. The Collection Development Policy explains how decisions are made regarding such requests. Instructions on the procedure for requesting slides and digital images are provided in the section on facility use.
